Novel lignin-based plastics for sustainable polymer industry

Project aims to support regional SMEs development by fostering cross-border business contacts and the development of new products.

Specific objective:

  • Develop a scaleable process to replace fossil based non-biodegradable styrene with a biodegradable bio-based styrene counterpart from wood biomass
  • Form connections between private companies and universities as well as between Estonia and Russia

Main activities:

  • Investigation of metal-catalyzed and vanillin routes from lignin to styrene-type compounds
  • Scale-up and adjustment of the synthesis process to ensure high yield and cost-efficiency
  • Development of formulas and technology for obtaining polymeric composite materials based on polyolefins and hydrolytic lignin
  • Testing of selected monomers in the polymerization process and optimization of the conditions of the synthesis of polymers in the metal reactor
  • The applicability of the styrene type polymers in the production of coating materials
