Novel lignin-based plastics for sustainable polymer industry

Project aims to support regional SMEs development by fostering cross-border business contacts and the development of new products.

Specific objective:

Develop a scaleable process to replace fossil based non-biodegradable styrene with a biodegradable bio-based styrene counterpart from wood biomass
Form connections between private companies and universities as well as between Estonia and Russia

Main activities:

Investigation of metal-catalyzed and vanillin routes from lignin to styrene-type compounds
Scale-up and adjustment of the synthesis process to ensure high yield and cost-efficiency
Development of formulas and technology for obtaining polymeric composite materials based on polyolefins and hydrolytic lignin
Testing of selected monomers in the polymerization process and optimization of the conditions of the synthesis of polymers in the metal reactor
The applicability of the styrene type polymers in the production of coating materials
